The Final Cut

So afters many weeks, day and hours of stress arguments and planning we have eventually finished our film we are so happy with the way the film turned out.
Now all that's left to say if to sit back and enjoy.

Below is our final cut.

In my next post I will begin to answer the evaluation questions.

Rough cut feedback

So know that we have finished our rough cut this is the time when we show it to an audience ( Our media class) and see what they think of the film opening. By doing this we will be able to identify improvements that we need to make and also see the reaction of the audience at certain times during the film.

Below is the feedback we received from our media class and teacher ( Mr Hood )

Rough cut feedback

What we needed to improve

  1. We needed to change the idents as they didn't match the genre of the film also a fade should be used to show that it is the end of the ident and know we start the action. this will make it look more professional and make the beginning flow better.
  2. The tracking shot of the garage was in the wrong place as it didn't follow what happened next as instead of walking through a house it looked like the actor was entering the garage and became a bit confusing to the audience. To make this less confusing we will have to as a group decided weather it will be best to get rid of it completely or move to a different point in the film. Mr hood mentioned in the feedback back to move the tracking shot of the garage to where Tam's works out of the kitchen but this will need a lot of discussing
  3. The titles are out of the save zone and like Mr Hood said in our feedback if this film was shown on an old analogue TV the titles wouldn't be seen so I think we will have to rethink the position of the titles.
  4. In our rough cut we had a slow motion effect when the lock fell to the floor however even though we really liked this edit during our feedback the slow motion was slightly frowned up on as it gave no purpose to the film it was a useless edit.  Due to these comments we will have to get rid of this scene. and just see Tam unlock the garage.
  5. In the feedback we found that the pan of the garage was two fast and this made the audience feel uncomfortable due to this the scene will have to be re filmed but making sure the pan is slow and continuous.
  6. The biggest part the audience didn't like was the ending where we see Marc running down the street before turning of to take as seat on the grass. The scene was to long and because you are only watching someone running the audience became bored. To correct this we will probably use a fade to split up,the running and also start the run from where Tam disappears from the drive. We also broke the 180 degree rule as half way through his run it looks like Marc turns back on himself this is easily solved as the shot can simply be flipped in final cut.

From our feedback it is clear we need to re-film some of our film and also edit the colour of some scenes to make an obvious change from day to night.

Next post is our final cut

The rough cut

So here it is. it has eventually arrived after many stressful days, arguments and planning Regium finally have a rough cut to be proud of.

Below is Regiums rough cut.

We hope you enjoyed that know all that is left to do is to get feedback and act on what they have said.

Next post I will talk about our feedback and what we will chance to produce our final cut.

Title and Ident construction

Many films begin with two idents one to show the production company and the other to show the distributor. Idents play a mayor part in film and so when producing our rough cut we had to take idents in to consideration. Due to the fact that we couldn't decide what to use for our idents we had to use place holders in our rough cut. When deciding what to use for our ident we had many different suggestions and ideas however we needed two that represented or production team and so we looked and we looked through different styles and genres until eventually we found two that we were all happy with.

Below are our ident we chose to use,

Regium productions ident,

We chose to use this design as we felt it captured the feminine side to our group as all of us are indeed female. We also chose this design as it is similar to our original ident idea that involves the colour purple and moving images. At the end of our ident the movement stops and our production name appears this helps the audience to see and read the name probably. We also decided to add productions to the end of our idents as it makes it seem more neat and professional compared to just having the production name. It also helps identify to the audience what part of the film we were involved in.

Working 4 Films idents

This is our distribution ident. It was originally used as a joke however when we dug deep into the reason for using it we found that to the audience the name working 4 would come across as a company that makes great and successful films. For this ident we chose to use a film reel due to the fact it looks like the company has had a lot of experience we also used a film reel as the company includes the word film in it name.

Title

Above is the title of our film this appears right at the end of our film opening. We chose to put the title at then end as it gives the audience chance to react to what they just saw. As a group we decided to keep the title plain and simple. We chose to use white writing as we felt it stands out to the audience and doesn't detract them to much from what they just saw.

Next post is our final rough cut.

Editing

So from the shooting process we move onto the editing. As you may know editing is one of the most important parts of filming as without editing the film would have no meaning and no effect basically the film would be pretty boring.  By editing the film it allows you to develop you short scenes into a film as you can crop scenes and place them in the order you wish them to be you can also add effects such as colour, sound effects and sound tracks and make sure there in the right place.

After many painful hours editing we finally produced a rough cut to be proud of. To give a little insight into how we edited our film we produces a screen cast which talks you through any changes we wanted to make and also how we edited the film.

Below is the screen cast.

As Sara is more confident in using final cut Nareece and I took a step back  compared to the filming process, however we didn't just leave Sara on her own as we both turned up to the editing sessions that were arranged. I think this helped Sara as due to her staring at a computer screen for hours it was easier for Nareece and I to spot the errors and improvements. I also helped with getting the soundtrack and sound effect in the right place so that it gave the film tension and suspense.

Overall I feel the editing process was successful as we were all their to help and support each other.

In my next post I will talk about our Indents

Shooting on Location (Day Two and Three)

So during days two and three we managed to shoot the rest of our film which is what we intended to do. The sessions were successful as all the crew members and both of our actors Marc ( Tyler ) and Tam ( Rachel ) were presents and the filming ran smoothly.

Session Two,

Well session two we chose to film on a Monday( bin day ) because of this we decided to get the scenes involving Marc running down the street done first. The reason we filmed these scenes first were so we didn't have continuity errors with the bins due to the neighbours taking then in or the bin men moving them. Due to us filming on a bin day we found that there wasn't enough space left on the pavement due to the bins being in the way and if we had continued to film on the pavement then the framing wouldn't of been right as Marc's head would of been chopped of. So with our high visibility jackets and a lot of hesitation we took to filming on the road giving us another reason to film these scenes first as we didn't want to be disturbed by bin lorries or rush hour traffic.
On day two we managed to film,
  • The scene were Marc ( Tyler ) runs down the street.
  • Tam ( Rachel ) bursts open the doors of her hide out and starts to walk down the drive.
  • Tam following Marc down the street.
  • Tam Sneaking up behind Marc and wrapping her hands round his neck.
During session two I contributed by,
  1. Looking and observing for any continuity errors that could be prevented ( even though I did miss one and also checking the safety of the equipment and crew.
  2. While using the tracking equipment I stood at the end of the track to stop the camera sliding of the track I also moved the track along when required so we could make a long tracking shot of Marc ( Tyler ) running.
  3. I also helped give ideas on how we could improve areas of the film.
  4. Setting up and putting away equipment and making sure it was in the correct place for the scene.
Overall I think Day two was successful as we managed to get filmed what we intended to film and solved the issues we came across quickly also all crew members and actors were present.

Session Three,

As most of the filming was done in session two not much filming needed to be done in session three. We only needed Tam in session three as all Marc's scenes had already been completed and so he had nothing to do. Due to the outdoor filming being done we mainly spent session three in the garage or as its better known as Rachel's hideout. During Session three the filming ran quiet smoothly due to us facing less issues meaning our full attention was on the filming and checking for errors that were made.
During session three we finished filming,
  • The establishing shot of the garage and the tracking shot up to the garage showing a close-up of the lock.
  • The pan of the garage
  • Point of view shot showing the murder board
  • close-up of Tam putting her hood up.
During session three I contributed by,
  1. Looking for any continuity errors and also for issues associated with the filming process.
  2. Setting up of three point lighting and making sure they didn't overheat.
  3. I also had ago at filming the pan of the garage.
  4. came up with ideas.
Over all session three was really successful as all the filming was completed and mistakes corrected.

Below is our Vlog of session two and three. Enjoy.
