Shooting schedule

What is a shooting schedule

A shooting schedule is a detailed plan or a list of all the days you are filming, filming times, who is needed and crew members needed. This is so the crew and the actors don't get confused on what day they are filming what bit it allows them keep on track of what has been filmed and what needs to be filmed.

What people need to remember when it comes to the shooting is that the scene don't need to be filmed in order. It is much easier to film all the shots from one location and time period first as it is much more easier and convenient for the people involved in the film making process. It would be impossible to film in chronological order. For example if the actor you are using has to grow a beard they wont wait for ages for the beard grow then just shave it of they will employ the actor once the beard has grown then they will shoot all the scene that include the actor with the beard first then they will shave it off and do the scenes where the actors don't have a beard. Many film are also filmed in different location and so it would seem pointless for the crew and the equipment to keep travelling to different location just because that location is where the next seen is however it makes sense to film all the scene from one location first the move to another location after.

Example of a film that was shot not in order

When filming harry potter a lot of different locations were used such as the Dursleys house, the train and Hogwarts. so the crew decided to do one location first then move to the next location.

The Dursleys House

Our shooting schedule

When creating our shooting schedule we had to talk to our two actors on what days would be the most convenient for them. on our first shooting we only needed the crew and Tamarin Webster but on the second we need every one. we also had to take into account what equipment we needed as we had to book them out and also what time of day is the best to film

Here is our finished shooting scheduled

Actors release forms

Before we can film anyone or any part of a film it is important that all actors involved in the film sign an actors release form. if the actor is older then 18 then their own signature will do however if they are younger then a second signature is needed from the parent or guardian of the actor.
Actor release forms are important at it gives the crew the right to film that person and for the film to be shown by the public. With out these forms then it could be possible for the actors to sue the crew as they haven't agreed for themselves to be shown in public. It also give the actors a change to read the terms and conditions and what filming this film means to them.
If you sign the actors release form you no longer have the right to disagree or agree  to the final film. you are also gaining knowledge that the production company is professional

Our film includes 2 actors so before we could start shooting our film we had to make sure we had a signed signature from both then and their parents as they are under the age of sixteen.
Here is the proof that we got them to sign a actors release form.

In my next post I will talk about the shooting schedule

Risk assessment

A risk assessment is when all the things such as hazards, what are the risks associated with the hazard and how the risk can be prevented. A risk assessment is important as they inform people of the hazards it tells you who is at risk of that hazard and prevents the risk from occurring. For example in the place of film a hazard may be to burn yourself on a light the person at risk would be the person operating the light to prevent getting burnt gloves could be worn.

When creating a risk assessment the hazard are identified by looking at each area that will be used. When filming to see if their is any hazards you need to look at the types of hazard that can occur by using each piece of equipment. The risk assessment is a very important document which need to be done tho-rally and with dual care and attention.

So before we started filming our Film Fatal Envy we created a risk assessment. We hope the risk assessment will help prevent any Crew or Actors being injured. It is important to review the risk assessment before each day of filming so you are clear on the hazards as if an actor is injured then the film makers can be sued.

Here is the risk assessment for Fatal Envy.

Anamatic

Fatal Envy the animatic.
Here is our animatic we created for fatal envy. We as a group spent lunch time upon lunchtime working out how long we wanted each shot length to be ,uploading the image to the final cut software, figuring out what sound track and sound effect we wanted use and then finally putting them all together to create this amazing animatic Enjoy!

We as a group showed our animatic to the rest of our class to see what they though about it and to be honest we had some mixed opinions here is what they said.

Is the narrative clear?
This was a hard question as some people in the class understood the narrative completely to the very last detail. where as others said that the image wasn't clear enough. I think though to make every one happy if we ever make an animatic again we will have to make sure that all the images a clear to the last detail.

Have the group framed the images appropriately?
We had mixed opinions on this question also were some of our class mates said that our shot types were clear and could easily be understood where as other said they weren't appropriate.

Has the group chosen the most effective shot type?
We had some positive feed back on this question as most of our class mates said that  the shot types we have chosen to work will be effective to the audience. However our class warned us that the idea of using a 360- degree shot may prove to be tricky and hard to recreate. However we won't know if we don't try.

Is the film opening around 2 minuets in length?
Our film opening should be around the time of 2:09 however this is going of how long our final animatic was once we have added the film title and indent our opening film will be at 2:15 which should be okay.

Does the sound track effectively support the action?
All our peers seemed to agree that the sound track worked with action tremendously however when it comes to the editing process we will have to make sure that the stingers in the music is timed probably with the action.

Does the animatic suggest that they are ready for the shooting stage of production?
All our class mates agreed with each other when it came to this question they all said that they though we were ready for filming however need to make sure we pay attention to mice en scene

In my next post I will talk about risk assessments

Animatic Research

What is an animatic

An animatic is a story board that has been brought to life. It is when each scene from the storyboard is brought together. Animatic is when you add in what will be included in the film such as the camera movement, dialogue, sound track, sound effects indents and titles . By creating an animatic it allows the crew to see where each element is placed in the film so they can refer back to it if they need to and  also check to see if anything needs changing before starting the filming it also  helps the sound composers now what type of music will be need to be created. To me the animatic is the most important start of creating a film as it give you an insight into how the film will look when it has been completed.

Here is a video of what an animatic is.

How to make and use an animatic

Here is an example of a animatic

Here is an example of the animatic compared to the film of Budapest hotel

In my Next post I will show you our animatic for Fatal envy and some feedback we had.

Storyboard research

Once the script is written for a film or animation. The next step is to make a storyboard. But what exactly is a storyboard? well a story board visually tells the story of a film/Animation step by step. It is in a way kind of like a comic strip. A story board should convey things such like

  • What characters are in a frame and how are they moving
  • Dialogue
  • How much time has passed between the last frame and the current frame
  • Camera moments
By creating a storyboard it will help plan out your film/animation shot take by shot take. It will also allow you to make changes to see that everything is perfect before you begin your film/animation.

Here is a video if you still need further information of what a storyboard is.

Below is an example of a film storyboard from Thunder ball a 1965 film

This is how the scene from the storyboard ended up on the actual film.

Now time for our storyboard for our film Fatal Envy

We planned, we researched, we argued but after many hours spent deciding on our final plan we eventually all came together so that our story board was the best we could make it and was also exactly how we wanted it and this is the final result.
PS excuse the stick men.

In my next post I will talk about Animatic research and Our films Animatic

Props research and formal list

Props is one the most important they help with the story line to help the audience understand what is going on. However some people get confused with what a prop it and what the background is so to make it clear a prop is an object that the actors use in a scene for example a pipe, or a newspaper. the scenery or setting is the background used in the scene and what it needs to include.
In the picture below you can see a walking stick this would be a prop as it is being used by a actor. If you look at the netting then the netting is in the scenery and is not a prop

So we new what props we were using and also who uses them a formal list was created this list is created when making any type of production. It is used as a type of checklist so that nothing is forgotten.
Below is  a prezi which include details of each prop that we will be using in our film Fatal Envy there is also a formal list.

In my next post I will talk about storyboard research

Costume research

When creating our film Fatal Envy it is really important that we think about costume as it is the costume that tells the audience who and what the character is and how the costume represents the character. With costume we have to think if the costume fits with the thriller genre we are creating as different colors and types of clothing portrays different things

Tyler's costume

In our film Tyler is first seen jogging down the street and because of this we decided to dress Tyler in a tracksuit, however Tracksuits can be seen in different ways as different types of tracksuits can imply different things for example if Tyler was seen in an old tracksuit where the colors have faded and are a bit baggy then \Tyler will be portrayed as a lower class chav. If Tyler however was to wear a tracksuit which looks smart and presentable with a cotton look and feel to it, it would make Tyler look more like an athlete and that he cares about his appearance which is what we want to be portrayed the fact that he is wearing a branded tracksuit also shows the audience that he is from a middle class background.

Here is the tracksuit Tyler will be wearing.

Below are two clips one clip is how we want Tyler to be portrayed and the other is quiet the opposite.

Rocky

Even though what rocky is wearing may look luck a bit chavy to today's people when rocky was filmed this types of tracksuits were quiet fashionable. In this clip rocky is seen as the athletic type who wants to keep fit and healthy  which is how we want Tyler to be portrayed by the viewer in our film Fatal Envy. Another clip that shows athleticism is,

Captain America

This scene shows how the clothes we have picked for Tyler will be used to portray Tyler's athletic side.

How we don't want Tyler to be portrayed.

We don't want Tyler to be portrayed like a chav for example the image below,

This image shows what a stereo typical chav would wear.

Tyler's Shoes

The shoes that Tyler will be wearing will be vans,

We chose to use vans as professional skateboarders wear them as they give a good grip.As well as being worn by skateboarders vans are seen as a athletic brand. Tyler will be seen jogging down the street in shoes like these obviously showing his athletic side also vans like these are not cheap and there for will portray that Tyler is from a middle class status. Another reason why we chose to use vans is that they are highly in fashion with the younger people mostly men.

Rachel's Costume

When it comes to Rachel's costume we need to represent the fact that she is a revengeful murderer this is why we decided to dress Rachel in all black as the color black represents Death, darkness and mystery witch sums up Rachel's personality.
Rachel will be wearing black skin tight jeans, grey polo shirt, black hoodie and black boots.
An example of her costume is shown below.

We decided to use this Outfit as it is seen as casual and a every day look it also links in with her age as this type of clothing is seen a fashionable. Rachel will wear the jeans, t-shirt and boots when in her house and then the jacket will cover the t-shirt when she is outside. The boots that will be worn by Rachel will be doc martin we chose these as, as well as them being fashionable to the younger generation they also look like combat boots this will make Rachel look more masculine and adventurous this will also portray to the audience how Rachel is ant-stereotypical women. The hoodie will be black also showing the mysterious side to Rachel and that she can't be trusted we chose to use the hoodie as hoodie can be worn to hide away from others and as she is trying to stalk and kill Tyler obviously she doesn't want to be seen.
Below is our formal costume list,

Representation of films ( Hunger games )

District 1

These are shown as the most wealthy district who can afford luxury such as high quality food, perfume. The posh clothing and bright colors also portray high class background and also shows that they think there better then any one else
Example shown below,

District 2

There isn't much different between district 1 and 2 as district two are still quiet wealthy this is shown the beautiful brig rant color of gold that they are wearing as gold is seen as expensive.
Example shown below,

District 11

District 11 is nothing like district 1 or 2 they are seen as one of the poorer district who can't afford luxuries like good quality food or perfume they have to make do with what they have. There clothing portrays they class as working class as they are dressed in a american style outfit.
Example below of district 11

District 12

District 12 is the poorest district even though there clothes don' portray this it can be seen by the fact the clothes are very plain and also a boring color of black.
Example of district 12

Representation of films don't however need to be on the wealth of some one it can also be the convection's of anti and stereotypical characters for example.

Sharpay and Lara croft

Sharpay is a stereotypical women. wearing high heels, dresses makeup and not one hair out of place. This shows her femininity and is how the audience expects to see a women character.

Lara croft on the other hand challenges the convection's of a stereotypical. The costume she wears suggest that she is more masculine compared to sharpay this is shown by the fact that she is wearing dirty old shirts and a normal white polo shirt the type of costume you would expect to see a male wearing in the face of a battle or on combat duty

In my next post I will be talking about Props research and formal list

Location Research

Location forms a big and important part in the world of film. Location helps portray the story to the audience. For example for a thriller the location is normally low key lighting and a spooky lonely place as it makes the atmosphere more scary and tense to the viewer. If the thriller was filmed in a place with high key lighting and pretty and bright colors then the tense atmosphere wouldn't be portrayed.

Action Films
Most action films use location such as cities or public places this is due to the fact that action films tend to use a lot of explosions and public places helps portray  terror to the audience as innocent people may be getting hurt.

Here is two example of a Action films.

White House Down

Drive angry

Comedy Films
Comedy Films try to use location that appear in peoples lives such as their home or public streets and markets they make the audience laugh by touching on what happens in real life situation making people engaged in the film.

Here are two example of  comedy films

Carry on doctor

Happy Gilmore

Horror films
Horror film are normally filmed in a spooky locations such as in a dark forest or a dark lonely house that is in the middle of no where normally surrounded by trees.

Here are two examples of a Horror film

The women in black

The boy

Location research for our film Fatal Envy

A lot of things have to be considered when it comes to the location of a film. When deciding for the location of our film Fatal Envy we considered that our location would represent and suit the genre of our film.( Thriller)
When considering what location to use for our film we came up with two places our local park or Nareece's house and green space surrounding it. The benefits of the park was that  no cars would be  needed to get us there and would also have a  large filming space to work with. However when we came down to the nitty gritty parts such as continuity errors we found that the park would be unsuitable as we couldn't stop cars passing through the street while filming a scene and also we wanted to portray the status of our protagonist to show that she is from a low class background.
So in the end we decided to shoot our film at Nareece's house as we can store equipment safe and securely, the street is quiet peaceful with hardly now cars or people passing through it. meaning their is a lower chance of a continuity error.

Below is a presentation which show the location our team have chosen and also why we chose it.

The Script

What's a Script? including some examples.

All films need a script. Scripts are a pieces of written work wrote by the screen writer for a film, video game or television. The script include vital information for the film such as movements, actions, expressions and dialogue of the characters and also narrators. The format of a screenplay is normally structures in a way that one page usually covers 1 minute of screen time and each scene is numbered.
Below is a example of a script template.

Script Template

One of the common things in script writing is that there need to be a brief description about the setting and location so the filmmakers can get a feel of what atmosphere is being brought across. For example is the scene inside or outside, what time period is it set and also what scene it is. When it comes to script writing it is important that new characters being introduced should be wrote in CAPITAL LETTERS so that it is clear to the reader that this is a new person.
Below is a real film Script example.

The Treatment

What is a treatment

A treatment is unlike any other type of writing. It the blueprint for a screenplay or theatrical play that never gets produced or published. A treatment plans everything from camera moment to where the characters enter the scene or frame. In both television and film making the most common treatments are Original dramatic treatment, (treatment of dramatic story line invented by the writer) Adaptation treatment and treatment or true stories. The treatment can be used for the storys development and written pitches.

Below are two examples of a treatment and the actual film. But did the films stick by the treatment?

Toy Story Treatment

toy story

The original film of Toy Story

As you can see films don't necessarily follow the treatment for example in Toy story the film was suppose to start in a factory according to the treatment when in the final film the film started in a young boys bedroom.

What is the role of the Sound editor and the Film score composer

What is the role of the sound editor

The sound editors job begins once the movie has been filmed and all the dialogue has been recorded this is also known as the post production stage. During this stage the directors work really hard to choose the best shots to be used in the final cut and is also the time when all the sound effects are added. The sound editors job is to prepare all dialogue, sound effects, background sounds and music for the final cut. They start with sorting and cleaning up the dialogue and as the recordings are normally done separately when the director has chosen what takes they are including the sound editor has to match the action with the correct recording. The sound editor then has to make sure the picture and the recording are in sync with each other. They also have to remove any background noise such as planes flying over head. It is also the sound editors job to match the music and sound effects to the correct action or place in the film if this isn't done then the sound effects won't match with action.
Below is a video from a film sound editor explaining what he has to do as a job and how important the sound editors role is in film.

Step by step guide of the role of the sound editor and what they do

The role of the film score composer

The role of a film composer or score composer varies according to the project. In basic terms a film composer finds, writes or makes music to accompany the film. The music composed could be a dramatic orchestral piece or could rely on other songwriters and a small group of musicians. The film score composers role is to meet with director when all the scene of the film has been shot and edited so that they can discuss what type of music would best fit the film and also what type of music they need. Another role is to sit in a watch parts of the film with the directer and see where the music should start or finish and also how it should sound. Once this is done the film composer then write out the score of all the music sections that is being included in the film. for a 100 minute film the film composer would probably write 50 minuets of music. Once all this is finished to the highest quality the film composer give notes, and rough score to the arrangers and copyists so they can produce a musicians score.
Below is a video that explains further the role of the film composer from an actual film composer

What is a Wilhelm scream

A Wilhelm scream is a stock sound effect that has been used in more the 225 films. The scream is usually used when people are shot, falling from a great height or in an explosion and most likely recorded by actors or singers. The scream was named after private Wilhelm a character in the film The charge at feathers river. A western in which the character gets shot with an arrow . The sound effect gained popularity when it was used in films such as Star wars, Indiana Jones and Disney block busters. The chances are you have heard the Wilhelm scream but never really taken much notice to it. The Wilhelm scream was recorded in 1951 and was reused in different films in a way of a joke and was put in every episode of star wars and Indiana Jones coursing fans and directors to take notice.
Below is a video of the original scream and also the scream in another film.

Recording sound on location and ADR

As all of you will know recording sound is one of the most important when it comes to filming but recording on location is never as easy as it sounds. You come across problems such as the wind, rain and snow witch can course sound issues when the film is played back as you may come across rustling that has been caused by the wind making it difficult to hear the dialogue. Another  problem is if the character is at a distance it may be difficult to get a high quality sound as the microphone can not pick up their voices this is where the ADR comes in. The ADR stands for Automated dialogue replacement this is where you can re- record the dialogue back in the studio however as the actors have said the dialogue in the filming process when coming to the ADR they need to make sure they say the exact same thing again else it wont match the films dialogue. Below I explain further recording on location and also some of the audio technical codes Enjoy!

Recording sound on location.

Obviously when it comes recording on location you have to have a recorder and a microphone the image below is some instruction on how to use the recorder and microphones and how to import it into the final cut

291668613 on Location Recorder Instructions

Issues and Solutions when recording on location.

Recording on location isn't always as easy as it sounds, Sounds can have many different issues that makes your recording life hell. To prevent this solutions have been but in place, some are mentioned below,

Wind and other sorts of weathers, wind and weather is a big problem when it comes to recording on location as the wind interferes with the microphone giving an annoying rustling or hissing sound over the actors voice. To prevent this from happening fur is put on the outside of the microphone this stops the wind hitting the microphone directly as the fur slows down the wind and acts as a sort of wind break this stops the hissing sound from occurring. You may of seen these types of microphones on news channels or interview where they are most commonly used.

Boom operators, When recording at a distance way from the action then other noises are picked up and it is hard to hear the actors voices this makes it difficult to hear what the actors are saying also if you have a close up of actors talking but the camera men have no choose but to record the sound from a distance then the sound and the action won't match. To prevent this a boom operator is used. A boom operator is an assistant of the production team their responsibility is to replace the microphone with a boom mic ( a long pole with a microphone attached to the end ) their aim is to hold or balance the boom mic as close to the actors as humanly possible without allowing the boom mic to enter the camera frame. This is a difficult and tiresome job. In some cases in film you can see the microphone hovering in the frame ( major continuity error )

Ambient noise - Ambient noise is the background noises or sounds that are heard in a scene or on location. Ambient noises can be anything from Wind, Water, Birds, Crowds, office noises etc. These types of sounds are really important  when it comes to film as it provides

  • Audio continuity between shots
  • An unnatural silence when no other sound is present
  • helps change the mood
However on  some occasions when filming ambient sounds are not wanted and it just gets in the way. To prevent hearing ambient sound without spending a fortune for a special sound proof room solutions have to been but in place. One solution is the use of a directional microphone. These are microphones that are sensitive to sound from various directions some microphones can pick up sounds from all directions others from only one direction each microphone has a different pattern and each pattern does a  different job if you want  to capture sound equally from all directions then a Omnidirectional pattern is used or if you want to isolate the sound then a Hypercardioid pattern is used such as shot guns this helps give a clearer sound as it cuts out the ambient sound.

To further your understanding of the solutions above here are some Examples,

Boom operator

Equipment

Boom Microphones
A boom microphone is basically a metal pole with a microphone (usually a shotgun microphone) and all its components attached to the end some people refer to this item as a dead cat on a pole. It is useful for recording on location as the person recording doesn't have to stand right up close to the actor to get a good sound quality instead a boom microphone allows you to get a good quality of sound by standing a distance away from the action this means that the sound operator doesn't have to enter the frame, however if you are recording dialogue then you need to make sure that the microphone is pointing towards the actors mouth it not then sound quality could be poor. The boom microphone is controlled by a person called the boom operator who's job is to hold the boom mic above the action and also to follow the action to make sure the sound is at a good standard throughout the scene they are shooting. They also have to make sure the microphone is pointing in the wright place. This can become a very tiresome job and can lead to the microphone entering the frame due to the operator arms aching or an accidental slip.
Below is a video explaining what a boom microphone is, how it works and also the different

Lavaliere microphone

A lavaliere microphone also known as a lav or a label microphone is a small electret that is most commonly used for TV and Theatre. They are used so that the people using them are hands free meaning they can move and do what ever they like without relying on a microphone for sound however the person using the devise is limited to movement as the microphone can rub against their clothes coursing static and also if they move their head to much then the sound has a tendency to drop out. If a lavaliere are used in film then it is a good idea to use a lavaliere microphone with a boom microphone, this will make sure that all the relevant sound is recorded properly. Most lavaliere microphones come with a clip so that it can be clipped onto clothing such as belts, collars and ties. Lavalieres usually come with there own power source and is normally a small battery pack.
Below is a video showing some tips on how to use a lav microphone and also a video to gain further your knowledge of what a lav microphone is,

What is a lav microphone ( funny but tells you what is needed

Tips and  Tricks

Shotgun microphone

A shot gun microphone is a directional microphone commonly used in TV and movie making. They are used to amplify sound directly in front of the microphone rather then the ambient sounds, however can pick up some sound from the left, right and rear of the mic. A shot gun microphone is a narrow shaped microphone and is so named because when the mic is mounted on a camera it takes the shape of a shotgun and also like a shotgun it has to be pointing at its target in order to be useful. Shotgun microphones are good to use for things such as, talks, speeches or conferences as they don't have to hold the microphone in order to record their voices instead they can stand and talk at a distance as long as they talks to the front of the mic.
Below is some videos that explain what a shot gun microphone is and also how they are used.

How shot gun microphones work

pop shield

When recording or speaking through a microphone the mic can pick up certain letters better then others such as Ps giving a poping effect that occurs through fast moving air. To prevent this a pop filter is used this prevents the pop noises from occuring. Pop shields can also be used to keep moisture of the microphone that could course mold to grow.  Pop filters/shields are a circler divice commoly made out of woven nylon that is streched over the circular frame and often includes a clamp and a flexible mounting bracket. Pop filters are most commonly used forindoor use such as a recording studio.
Below is some videos to help you understand further what a pop shield is,

As part of our preparation for our film our production team Regium had to pitch our film to the rest of our media class and also our teacher and his companions. We had to say what the film will be called ( Fatal Envy), the basic plot of what is going to happen, location, clothing, the characters background, the protagonist and antagonist, our production teams name and why we chose it , target audience and much more. It had to be carefully thought about and presented.

Here is a video of the pitch;

To support our pitch we created a presentation, the presentation gave the people a better understanding of what the location would look like as we had a picture of the old garage we was going to use and also the street and house,  it also helped the people to know what was going to be explained next.

Hear is our presentation;

  1. Add a cutaway going from the protagonist to the garage to make the audience aware that the garage means something that it is important it would  help build tension to the opening and would also bring a bit of life, as lets be honest just watching and following a person jogging  down the street would become a bit boring

  2. Give a reason for the protagonist to stop as a young man walking than just sitting down to take a drink isn't very realistic also it may look to the audience like he walking to his death. So to concur this mild stone members of our class pitched some ideas these were that Malcolm could have some earphones in meaning he wouldn't be able to hear Rachel following him or another idea was that Malcolm's show lace could come undone and so he sits down to retie them.

  3. We could take a look at the Kevin Bacon movie Marathon to find to ideas and inspiration for the storyline and cutaway.

Evaluation Feedback;

The feedback we received from our class and our teacher were very useful and made us think a lot about how we were going to film our film to get the best from it, it also made us think of changing previous ideas so that the audience can understand better what is going on in the film as we found the previous ideas could become a bit confusing. The ideas we chose to change were,
To have one protagonist instead of two so it would be more clear to the audience who is the victim. Also instead of the protagonist walking down the street then sitting down for no reason we could have the protagonist jogging down the street this would give him a reason to sit down as he will need to rest and take a drink.

In my next post I will talk about recording on location and ADR.
